building the website
As the building of this site comes to a close, I’m reflecting on how much work went into it over the last few months. My own website has been a dream for a long time, but the backend work always seemed too daunting to execute correctly on my own. Now that I am running this site, I see that I was right to be daunted by the amount of whatsits and doodads it apparently takes to make this ship sail.
In January I received a message about applying to work with The Free Website Guys, an organization I had not heard of but am seriously lucky to have come across. You get a fair amount of sketchy, scammy dms as a seller, so I was at first sure there was nothing to this. I’m so glad I was wrong. I applied and was luckily chosen as one of a few clients they take on each month. I talk about the experience and the process more in depth on the pod, so to put it briefly, working with them was a dream. They ensured everything was optimized in a bunch of ways I don’t fully understand, even after years of learning how to optimize and run my own shops on places like Etsy. They took time to explain everything I need to know to properly run and change the site as needed. I had completely free reign over the design, and they have been there for my many questions since completing their side of the project. For me, this was the perfect route, because even with website builders like Square Space, it seemed like I would want a professional (or two) to suss things out along the way. It was a blessing to have their time and expertise, and I only paid for the domain and theme, both discounted. All in all a wonderful experience and worth ten blog posts. Hear more in the latest episode of Rosanadu, where I also talk about the class and my process when it comes to painting space.
